- Fellow Manager: Concerned with power and territoriality. Need to
give him room to operate. When I acted without telling him, I was cautioned for not being
open.
- New Manager: There is a training issue with this person. A status and power problem. I
will train this person then ultimately report to him.
- Employee: A direct report. This person is a foreigner with a
different culture. He has different skills/temperament and interaction. He is direct and
without social skills. A bull in a china shop. Get it done and get out of my way.
- Co-worker in a social welfare agency: This person thinks welfare recipients are
"misfits" and "bums." He has no empathy or understanding.
He treats people with disrespect, profanity and violence.
- Boss: This person exhibits a different work ethic. He is
lackadaisical and too laid back until a crisis occurs.
- Direct Report: This is an emotional individual. You have to be careful addressing her.
This employee is sensitive at work and thinks she has done something wrong if you don't
talk to her everyday.
- Co-worker: This person is a workaholic. She is a late starter and
works to a different drumbeat than I do.
- Co-worker: This person has a work/power issue. He is lazy and calls out sick all of the
time. He also thinks he is in charge when he is there.
- Secretary: This person wants to do my job. I have given her
chances, tried to network but I have to baby-sit her instead. She is very good at what she
does, but is lousy at my job.
- Manager: This person has a power struggle and demonstrates one upmanship. She is a
foreigner who seems to have a need to prove herself. She often uses corporate vernacular
inaccurately.
- Employee: This person is highly intelligent and has "three
propellers." He is a computer geek. He doesn't have regard for other people's ideas
and doesn't think much about other people.
- Co-worker: This is a new person who has been there for six months but all organizational
skills are becoming problematic. He doesn't write anything down. He is a really nice
person and wants feedback but can't get organized.
- Department: Entire department experienced "death" as a
result of termination threats. There is also in the department an engineer who is in a
rock and roll band after work. He is often late, unreliable and causes a cultural problem
in the organization. He violates the company dress code.
- Co-workers (Two in particular): They are not from the U.S. and I can't understand what
they say. When working in teams with them, their instructions are incomprehensible and
they get mad at anyone who does not understand them.
- Safety Deposit Attendant: This person has been with the company
for 20 years and is 70 years of age. He is a problem with customers getting their boxes.
Customers want to hit him over the head with a box, but he knows the vault like the back
of his hand. Customers put up with him because he is experienced and efficient, but some
think he is too nasty and should be fired.
